Albert E. “Al” Hockley, Jr., 85, died Sunday November 22, 2015 at Country Court in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
He was born September 12, 1930 to the late Mary Elizabeth and Albert E. Hockley, Sr. of Toledo, Ohio. He graduated from M.R. Waite High School in 1948, and from the University of Toledo in 1952 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education. He married ZoeAnn M. Wilson that spring and entered graduate school in July. He taught English, History, and Science at Put-In-Bay High School until he graduated from the Stone Laboratory branch of The Ohio State University in August of 1954 with a Master’s of Science Degree in Hydrobiology.
He taught at Danbury Township High School from 1954-56, and at Mansfield Madison High School from 1956-82. In 1964 and ’65, he was an instructor in Biology for the O.S.U. Mansfield Branch. In the fall of ’81, he enrolled in the Ashland Theological Seminary and in 1984 he graduated from the Mansfield Grace Brethren Theological Practicum. He began his service in the Danville, Ohio, Grace Brethren Church on September 15, 1981, and served the congregation for over 20 years.
He was the former Chairman of the Science Department and Deacon at Ashland West Main, a former member of the Ashland Christian School Board, the Science Academy Council, ADAM Ministries, and the Christian Fellowship Club, and was the commencement speaker Madison 1982 graduation.
Al is survived by his wife, ZoeAnn, sons; Albert III (Maryetta) and Daniel (Pamela) Hockley, daughter, Mary Louise Thurston, 3 grandchildren; Adam, Jessica (Corey), and Thomas N. (Beth), and 3 great grandchildren; Braden, Isabelle, and Cobain.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 27, 2015 at the Danville Grace Brethren Church. Pastor Dennis Eggerton will officiate. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at Lake Township Cemetery in Millbury. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
