United Nations panel provides unique opportunity for Jimtown High School graduate
ELKHART — Joanna Whittaker’s first plane trip took her to the bright lights of New York City.
But it was far from your usual tourist trip.
The Jimtown High School graduate and Grace College freshman took a week off of school in to be the moderator of a youth panel at the United Nations.
“I never thought I would be speaking at the U.N. or even speaking in front of a group of people,” Whittaker said. “There were delegates there from all over the world, and where we held our panel, a room that usually holds 50 had over 100 people there.”
Whittaker, a criminal justice and psychology major at Grace, received the opportunity when her aunt, Sherry Neuenschwander, the Ohio director of Concepts of Truth International, contacted her about participating in the U.N.’s Commission on the Status of Women. Whittaker became the moderator for the Youth Dialogue and Drama Enpowerment portion of the event.
