American Slavery Wasn’t Capitalist
When I started reading Fergus M. Bordewich’s review of Edward Baptist’s “The Half Has Never Been Told” (Books, Sept. 6), I expected that capitalism would be found responsible for racial slavery. Mr. Bordewich agrees, “Mississippi . . . does not have to look like Manchester, England, or Lowell, Mass., to make it an engine of capitalism.” His evidence, apart from the use of slave labor to produce cotton for sale, is a market for slaves and bank credit for financing slavery.
