Moderator John Teevan (right) interviews singer/author/speaker John Fischer (left) at the beginning of the 2004 Celebration conference of the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches meeting in Kingsport, Tennessee. Fischer spoke three times on Saturday, including a Q&A session in the afternoon sponsored by the Association of Grace Brethren Ministers.
My second that is that baby boomer arrogance still lives. I don't know if John Fischer meant to imply that the Jesus Movement invented christian contemporary music or christian radio, but it sounded that way to me. And maybe Al Gore did invent the Internet? Bishop Sheen might have a different perspective on christian radio and the Gaithers may have an insight or two on Christian music. In fact, wasn't practically all christian music contemporary when it was written?
But the most significant personal insight was that the "denominational" church leaders of the early 70's must have been rolling over in their graves. After they fought so hard and preached so vehemently against such music, ultimately they lost. The "secular" folk music of the 70's was being performed at the opening concert for National Conference in 2004. Hmmm. Perhaps we ought to be more careful about picking our battles.
