Beverly McCarthy, the widow of former Grace Brethren pastor, Dick McCarthy, died on March 8. Her obituary appears below.
Beverly Lee (Saufley) McCarthy, 83, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on March 8, 2019 at home in Galion, Ohio.
She was the daughter of Alva and Irene (Krady) Saufley. Growing up on a dairy farm near Hershey, Pa., she was involved in 4-H, showing and judging cattle. She enjoyed acting in school productions and playing sports of all kinds (especially basketball and ice skating). Beverly started school a year early and skipped 8th grade, allowing her to graduate at 15 from Hershey High School in 1951.
In 1953, after completing secretarial school, she met a dashing ex-marine named Richard McCarthy, who asked,” Dancing?” She replied, “Church?” They compromised by going to church…and then danced down the aisle a year later on March 6, 1954. Richard went on to become a Grace Brethren pastor. Beverly helped support their growing family by taking various secretarial jobs, including several years at Mansfield Christian School.
Beverly was an encourager, a listener and a prayer warrior for her family, friends and strangers. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles (in ink!), playing tennis in her younger years and watching tennis later. She visited nursing homes, making friends and taking them things to read and eat. She loved returning to the Hershey area to catch up with her many relatives. At the risk of sounding biased, her children have concluded that, yes, Beverly was indeed the world’s best “Little Mommy” and they are eternally grateful that they were hers and she was theirs!
She counted herself truly blessed. With the Holy Spirit as her strength and guidance, she gave God all the glory for what He allowed in her life. Her faith in Jesus Christ and His saving work on the cross and resurrection was vital to her, along with the victory over death that can be achieved in no other way.
Beverly is survived by her four children Cindee (Tim) Huwe, Melissa (Mike) Taylor, Mark (Kathy) McCarthy and Kent (Kelly) McCarthy; grandchildren Michael Huwe, Nicholas Huwe, Kylie McCarthy and Keegan (Allie) McCarthy; and great-grandchild Lincoln McCarthy. She is also survived by sister Sonya Darr, brother Leon Saufley and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 55 years Richard McCarthy, parents Alva and Irene Saufley and sisters Audrey Klingler and Celia Belle Saufley.
A memorial service will be held at the Galion Alliance Church, 430 Portland Way North, Galion, Ohio, on Friday, March 22, 2019, at 7:00 pm. A greeting time will begin at 6:00 pm and light refreshments will be served afterwards during a time of fellowship.
