Dr. Douglas Moo (pictured) of Wheaton College in Illinois was the kickoff speaker for yesterday’s Bible translation seminar held in McClain Auditorium on the Grace College and Seminary campus in Winona Lake, Indiana.
About 100 individuals attended Moo’s presentation, including visiting FGBC pastors from the Heartland District, whose district ministerium meeting was scheduled to coincide with the seminar.
The event was titled “Recent Versions of the Bible and the Whistleblowers” and it approached the question “Do some translations misrepresent what the Bible means?”
Moo was instrumental in the new TNIV translation published by Zondervan, which has raised considerable controversy, particularly around the new translation’s gender references.
Scheduled responders included Dr. Mark Fairchild of Huntington University in Indiana and a panel response to include Moo and Fairchild, as well as Dawn Modlin and Dr. Mark Soto of the Grace Seminary faculty, with Grace’s Dr. David Plaster as emcee.
The seminar was backgrounded by a paper authored by Grace faculty members Roger Peugh, Brent Sandy, and Mark Soto entitled “Translating the Bible: Challenges, Questions, Controversies.”
