Yesterday’s Long Beach Press-Telegram carried a story about a new charter school that opened last week in Long Beach. It is housed at the Grace Brethren Church of Long Beach. A portion of the story appears below. Click here to read the complete article.
Intellectual Virtues Academy, a new charter middle school, opened Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Long Beach Unified School District-approved charter school is located in the Grace Brethren Church of Long Beach, 3601 Linden Ave., Long Beach.
Jason Baehr, a co-founder of the school, said that Intellectual Virtues Academy pushes against the tendency to “teach to the test” but meshes well with the new Common Core State Standards that public schools have adopted. Baehr is an associate professor of philosophy at Loyola Marymount University and paired up with another philosopher, Steve Porter, to develop the school, a mission they accomplished with the help of a $1 million grant from the John Templeton Foundation. Jacquie Bryant serves as school principal.
