Theme description: Highlighting four example sites, this study focuses on four key conflicts in the background of Jesus’ public ministry.

The Wilderness as a Place of Refuge
Theme description: The wilderness has a special place in Jesus’ ministry. John the Baptist preached from the wilderness. The Qumran community helps us see the divided audience that heard Jesus’ original preaching. Today we will seek to understand the impact of this barren region on the life of Jesus.
Sites: Masada, Ein Gedi overlook, Qumran, Jericho (conditions permitting). Overnight: Jerusalem (1).

Setting of the Birth Narratives (morning)
Theme description: We will investigate what the Biblical accounts tell us of Jesus’ birth, based on both the Matthew and Luke accounts.
Sites: Bethlehem, Shepherd’s Field, Herodion (all sites conditions permitting).
Mountains Around Jerusalem –Psalm 125:2 (afternoon)
Theme description: Viewing the city from high places around the city, we will define the protection of ancient Jerusalem mentioned by the Psalmist.
Sites: Haas Promenade. Overnight: Jerusalem (2).

Jesus in Jerusalem, Messianic Expectations
Theme description: With a specific view of the history of “other Messiahs” we will discuss the expectations for the Messiah, and their relationship to the record of the preaching of Jesus.
Sites: Mount of Olives walk, Gethsemane, Mt. Zion (Last Supper Room, St. Peter en Gallicantu), Western Wall, Old City walk. Overnight: Jerusalem (3).

Jewish Questionings and Roman Trials of Jesus
Theme description: The issues involved in the arrest, trial and conviction of Jesus will be our subject as we journey through the “salvation geography” of Jerusalem in the Gospel According to John.
Sites: Ancient Temple Mount and South Wall excavations, Pool of Bethesda, Via Dolorosa, Holy Sepulchre, Garden Tomb (3:00). Overnight: Jerusalem (4).
