Grace College graduate, Randy Roberts, and his Washington Township High School baseball team is vying for the Class A state title this afternoon at Victory Field in Indianapolis. An article in the Chicago Tribune tells the story. A portion of the article appears below. Click here to read the complete post.
Hutton: Washington Township coach Randy Roberts says, ‘We’re not going down there hoping to win. We expect to win.’
Randy Roberts has mowed the lawn of the Washington Township baseball field for 24 years.
He has never had to cut the grass while getting his team ready for a state championship game.
And he isn’t sure exactly how he feels about that.
Of course, Roberts is happy the Senators will play at 4:30 Monday against University for the Class A state title at Victory Field in Indianapolis, but it’s different.
“I don’t know what it means,” he said of playing for the state title. “I know I wanted it to happen a lot sooner.
“I could put my finger on four teams that were legitimate state champion contenders. I don’t know. We’ll see.”
Roberts is a baseball lifer with one championship already.
It just wasn’t in the continental United States.
After graduating from Grace College, he left for Wesleyan Academy in Puerto Rico to coach and teach.
In his second year, Wesleyan played in the B Division, which is equivalent to the small school division in Indiana, and beat a team in the A Division for the title.
It was huge.
