Brittany Misencik, a third-year journalism student at Grace College in Winona Lake, Ind., is one of several dozen young journalists chosen to participate in this year’s World Journalism Institute, a program of learning and practice for young journalists.
The dates of the institute are May 16-June 1, and it will be held on the campus of Dordt College in northwestern Iowa. This is the twenty-second year for the institute, which is funded and staffed by World Magazine, a Christian news magazine headquartered in Asheville, North Carolina.
Misencik is one of 26 young journalists who will hone their craft under the mentoring of practicing professionals in the fields of newspaper, magazine, radio, video, and photography. Each participant will leave with a nice portfolio of edited multimedia clips. Participants will also bond with their peers from around the nation who share an interest in journalism and spiritual beliefs, and they will benefit from developing a new network of professionals in the field — a factor that often gets job doors to open.
Dr. Terry White, Misencik’s journalism professor at Grace, said, “We are absolutely delighted to have our first student in this nationally-recognized program. Brittany has shown the kind of initiative and drive, coupled with a teachable spirit, that will enable her to achieve great success. We hope she is the first of many Grace students to receive this training.”
Last May, 26 students from 17 states and three countries attend the hands-on course at Dordt College. Students receive a full scholarship that includes tuition, housing and meals. World magazine says, “We believe so much in our mission of developing the next generation of journalists that we invest in them as they invest in their craft.”
The WJI course includes instruction in Christian worldview and the nuts and bolts of backpack journalism for convergent media. The intensive course includes pre-class assignments, two weeks of class residency, and six weeks of post-class reporting and writing. Further information is available at worldji.com.
