Pa. learning center helps some dreams come true
GREENCASTLE, Pa. — Nicole Mornhinveg said her math anxieties hindered her from pursing her dream of becoming a nurse for 20 years.
Mornhinveg of Chambersburg, Pa., sought the math tutoring help and support of Jennifer Toms, coordinator of the Community Learning Center in Greencastle.
Through tutoring, Mornhinveg has now been a nurse for more than a year.
“With her encouragement and her help, she tutored me prior to nursing school and during school,” Mornhinveg said. “She told me: ‘If you do this, I’ll help you. … We’ll get through this together.'”
Toms, a former teacher, said she had her own dream of providing affordable, flexible tutoring for individuals and families in the community.
After bringing her ideas to her pastor and his wife at Community Grace Church in Greencastle, the Community Learning Center was born as a ministry of the church at 17 N. Washington St.
The center developed in 2012 and serves as a place of tutoring and learning for middle school, high school, home-schooled and cyber-school students, as well as adult students in areas including computers, budgeting and GED preparation.
