As the calendar turns over to January 1 each year, it is always a good time for self-reflection and self-assessment.
As many readers know (see Bits ‘n Pieces), our 35-year-old daughter died at the end of October this past year. A sudden and unexpected death like this jolts many of us into asking the question “Am I ready to go?”
We know from Scripture there are no guarantees on length of life and, in fact, the book of James refers to our life as a “vapor.” Do you know for certain-with no equivocation-that you would go to be with the Lord if your life here suddenly ended?
If not, what a wonderful thing it would be to begin this new year having new life-eternal life-and being secure in the knowledge of your “forever future!”
All God requires of us is the recognition that we’re sinners, a sincere desire to repent from that lifestyle to become a God-follower, and an acceptance of the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, who provided salvation for us through his death on the cross.
If you’re ready to make that commitment, do so in words something like these: “Dear God. I’m a sinner and know it. I want to be united with You for eternity, not separated from You. Please forgive my sins and grant me the eternal life through Jesus Christ which You promised. Amen.”
He then expects two further actions from you: (1) seek to grow more like Him every day through reading the Bible and prayer, and (2) unite yourself with a good Bible-believing group of Christians who can support, encourage, and challenge you in your growth. Your nearest Grace Brethren church would be a good place to start!
