Former Grace College coach and athletic director Phil Dick started his second round of treatments for lung cancer yesterday. Here is the report from his daughter, Michelle. You can check the journal regularly by logging onto www.caringbridge.com and go to site phildick.
Dad is already starting to feel side effects from the first treatment. They had to put him on oxygen already. He didn’t have the chilling that can sometimes happen.
They did warn him that the side effects will happen more quickly on the 2nd (and subsequent) rounds, as your body “remembers” what it went through the first time.
Dad has received his first treatment. We arrived at the hospital around 10:30 this morning. They did all of the preliminary tests and all looked good. Dad and I had lunch at the cafeteria and then he had to be back in his room to start the IV before the 4:00 treatment. His spirits were good – glad to be getting started. He’s in room #240 this time.
I will keep you all updated regarding visiting him at the hospital – at this point I think it’ll be fine through the weekend. From our experience during the 1st round, we suspect he’ll be feeling pretty low on Monday and not real interactive, then he’ll start feeling better on Tuesday, Wednesday, etc. He had some visitors this afternoon and received 3 cards when he checked in! That was really encouraging for him.
Thank you for continued prayer. Please pray that he will be able to receive as many treatment as possible (as many as his body will tolerate).
