Pastor Chuck Winter in Sunnyside, Washington, sends along this inspiring story:
Lawrence Getsinger, head usher of the Grace Brethren Church in Sunnyside, Washington, continues a long-time recycling ministry using a bin in the church parking lot as a collection point. Each week he empties the bin of newspapers and magazines, aluminum cans and cardboard. Funds received from the recycling center go towards the ministry of David and Rose Torres, GBC National Missionary Partners in the Philippines.
This past year, 2009, Lawrence collected 439.81 pounds of aluminum cans, 1353 pounds of cardboard, and 21,937 pounds of newspaper and magazines. That meant $507.95 towards the support of the Torres’ family.
Lawrence has been doing this recycling for as long as I have known him and that stretches back at least 13 years. Each week, come rain or shine or snowfall, he empties the bin, recovers it with the canvas top and delivers the load to the recycler. Over the past 13 years that means only counting newspapers and magazines he has recycled something like 142 tons.
