Dr. Tammy Schultz and Hannah Estabrook, authors of the BMH book, Beyond Desolate, were recently interviewed on the Becoming a Better Dad podcast on the topic of sexual abuse. In it, the discuss ways to prevent it, signs to look for and also what to do if your child is sexually abused. They also talk about how to support your wife if she is the one who was abused.
The podcast, hosted by Grace College student Cory Witmer and his cousin, Andy Lehman, have been doing the podcast for nearly two years. “Andy approached me and asked what I thought about the idea of doing a podcast for fathers, not as experts but as two guys who want to be better dads (hence Becomming a Better Dad Podcast),” says Cory. “Our goal is to encourage men to be better at relating with their kids. One of our big pushes is to be involved in as much of your kid’s life as you possibly can. We know we aren’t perfect but we look to our Heavenly Father who is our strength.”
Beyond Desolate is a resource written for victims of sexual abuse and their family and friends, including caregivers of survivors of sexual abuse which includes mental health counselors, social workers, pastors, pastoral counselors, physicians, teachers, Stephen Ministers, and lay counselors. It is told through the lens of Tamar, who was raped by her brother. Beyond Desolate proclaims hope into a world not absent of ache, but a world where He bleeds with us and brings us a new song.
