Council OKs backyard chicken coops
After six months of petitioning city officials, a Simi Valley teen has succeeded in changing a local law so she can raise hens in her backyard as part of a 4-H project.
Hannah Nandor, a 15-yearold sophomore at Grace Brethren High School, first approached the City Council in July about amending part of the municipal code relating to farm animals. The council approved her request at its Monday meeting.
In December, the planning commission voted to recommend the approval of the amendment, which would allow residents with a permit to raise up to six hens in the backyard of a single-family home for educational purposes, according to Christine Silver, senior planner for the city.
