The lessons learned at one Grace Brethren ministry are being implemented by a volunteer in another Grace Brethren ministry. Community Grace Brethren Church, Warsaw, Ind. (Roy Chapin, pastor), is beginning a food program in Warsaw-area parks. It is led by Sue Kruger, who was inspired by Urban Hope, a ministry in Philadelphia, Pa., which is sponsored by CE National. The online news site, InkFreeNews, reports on the new development in Warsaw. A portion of the story appears below. Click here for the complete article.
LOVE IN ACTION PROGRAM COMING TO WARSAW PARKS
WARSAW — A new food program is beginning to take root among the members of the Warsaw Community Grace Brethren Church. Called Love In Action, the food program intends to offer a free meal to those without the money to feed themselves in Central Park at noon every third Wednesday of the month until September.
“I’ve always heard people say, ‘why don’t we help people at home,’ and this is one way we can,” Sue Kruger, founder of the program, said.
“A couple of months ago I went to Urban Hope, an outreach program with Grace College. I went to help out in the Kensington area of Philly … We send a lot of missionaries around the world, but so many churches forget that we need missionaries right here, and that is kind of what I took from that,” Kruger continued.
Kruger and her church plan to offer more than just a free meal, however. “What we want to do is just say ‘Hi, we’re here, we’ll listen to you and we’ll pray for you’ and in the process we’ll give them food with no strings attached … You have to learn to listen to their story and sometimes it’s heartbreaking,” she said.
