Yakima sheriff announces ALS diagnosis

Yakima County, Wash., Sheriff Brian Winter
Yakima County Sheriff Brian Winter announced Friday he has been diagnosed with ALS, a terminal illness also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Although Winter said he was cleared by his doctor to continue working at least through the first half of the year, he said it’s unrealistic for him to run for re-election. He said the length of time he continues working could also change.
“The greatest honor of my life has been to work as the sheriff of this tremendous county,” Winter wrote in a Friday afternoon news release.
